Speakers, tools enhance television sound

Question: I purchased a new LED-LCD TV and the picture is amazing, but the sound leaves much to be desired. Can you recommend a speaker system to assist? I have no interest in a home theater, just good sound, good movie dialogue and a simple, self-powered solution for under $400.

Answer: In the past I have recommended the $249 Swan M200 Mk. II speakers from theaudioinsider.com, and I still recommend them today. They have the look and sound of a pair of high-end bookshelf speakers and are a great value. I use a pair of these with a television in the exercise room of my home, so I can vouch for how well they work in this application.

An improved model with more power and even better sound, the M200 Mk. III, is available for $399. You can connect them to anything with RCA stereo connections or a headphone output.

There are favorably priced stereo soundbars and surroundbars available, and many consumers prefer the slim form factor. Some include wireless subwoofers for full-range sound. The Boston Acoustics TVee lists for $399, but I have seen it discounted online to $159. The Vizio VSB210WS has been favorably reviewed and sells for $169. Polk Audio invented the surroundbar and their upcoming Instant Home Theater IHT 3000 will sell for less than $400 if you want surround effects to go with your improved sound.

I bought the Polk Surroundbar with some trepidation, because it is an act of faith purchase expensive due to the fact that I could not find a distributor with a Polk exposure to the test. Fit and finish The SurroundBar is here and I was immediately struck by the integrity of the product. Instead of standard RCA type of connection as I have to be reorganized in on-line through the speaker wire than 2 connections, as recommended by Polk. The product is very strong and solid, closed with a real metal, which is very hi-tech and robust appearance. Moreover, the accessories included in the package (stand, stand, cables) are of the highest quality and complement the surrounding bar. The adaptation and the finish on the bar was very impressive.
